This is my final post for the series about my community for @smithsonianmagazine in Portland, Oregon. This is a self portrait, which includes my husband. I made this using a camera operated by a remote switch. We have been socially distancing and actively quarantining since March 15th. The photographs I made for the series that is published here, and the circumstances under which I made them, were largely driven in by the fact that I need to stay safe, not only for the sake of my husband, but as well as my parents and community. Given the ravaging impacts of Covid-19, it was, and remains, imperative that I, and everyone, practice socially responsible distancing guidelines. I close with this image of me and my life partner, in our home in Portland, Oregon. Peace, light, love and aloha to all people of Earth. The current circumstances allowed me to provide her so much focused care, and in those quiet moments as I nursed her, I realized how much she was teaching me about the will to live. Grief-stricken after her death, I took in two orphaned 4 week-old kittens who need to be mothered and bottle fed every 2-3 hours.
