Howdy! I just wanted to put a link to my other blog on this blog. It mainly covers our trips to hawaii and is chock full of turtle movies. You can see it here.

A bit of shameless self promotion here I photographed a story about Maui for the New York Times last fall and it ran today online. You can check out the story here. There is also a slideshow of photos you can see here. I did shoot while riding the zipline. It pays to always have carabiner in your bag to keep your camera attached to you at all times, even when hanging precariously over, well, anything.

It’s hard to believe that 2008 is over. When I look back at the year, I struggle to comprehend how so much happened in 365 short days. Travel included New York, San Francisco, Australia, Seattle, and of course, Hawaii. My first cover for National Geographic Traveler. My first shoot for the New York Times (in four years), the exposé of Margaret B. Jones, aka Peggy Seltzer. My first surf board. My brother turned 40. A new studio. Good friends in Maui. An alleged shark incident. My husband starts cooking Japanese cuisine. A total lunar eclipse. A monk seal on our beach. Barack Obama is elected president. The happiest thing: my two best girlfriends have baby boys. The saddest of all, our great friend Terry Toedemeier passes away. May he rest in peace.
This morning I noticed a red tailed hawk sitting on a branch in a tree across the ravine from my office. It had captured and was about to devour a chipmunk. I set up the Canon 5D Mark ll and took some footage as it ate the hapless creature. I’m still working on getting the compression settings right for the web, so I apologize if the quality of the image isn’t too good. If you watch carefully in the beginning, the hawk beheads the rodent and swallows the head whole in one big gulp. Mmmmm – a nice breakfast! There are two clicks in the movie which is where I took a couple of still frames (still testing the camera). Enjoy!
